Santa Barbara’s restaurant scene continues to get better and better.

So much so, that a total of 16 Santa Barbara County restaurants have earned a stamp of approval from the MICHELIN guide, which foodies worldwide look to for guidance on the very best places to eat. The community is all abuzz over the announcement that two of our own beloved restaurants recently received the most coveted accolade, a MICHELIN star rating. Between these rising stars, some notable new openings, and tried-and-true classics, we’ve narrowed down a list of 10 restaurants worth planning a trip around today. Collectively, they offer a snapshot of what American Riviera dining is all about. Some serve breakfast and lunch, so it’s entirely feasible to pack them all into a three- or four-night itinerary, depending on your culinary ambitions. Reservations are highly recommended at most, so planning ahead is rewarded. And after you’ve locked those dining reservations in, don’t forget to book your room!

Sushi|Bar Montecito: With only 10 spots available for each of the three nightly dinner seatings, Sushi|Bar Montecito is very much a hot ticket—even more so now after earning one MICHELIN star. Expect an elaborate 17-course omakase experience with Chef Lennon Lee putting his creative spin on traditional Japanese sushi. This meal is more than a feast, it’s interactive theater and no two dinners unfold alike. Bell’s: If you’re planning to spend a day in wine country, be sure to include a stop at Bell’s in Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County’s other MICHELIN star recipient. The cuisine here is a satisfying Californian twist on French by Chef Daisy Ryan. Lunch service offers more casual à la carte fare and walk-ins are welcome, while dinner is a fantastic, five-course prix fixe menu and reservations are generally a must. La Paloma Café: The newest addition to Acme Hospitality’s fine family of restaurants, La Paloma Café is a classic reborn. It occupies the 702 Anacapa Street space that was home to Paradise Café for decades. They returned it to its original name, updating the neon sign accordingly, and the outdoor patio received a major facelift—we love the ground level heating, which will make al fresco dinners even cozier as the nights get cooler. In terms of the menu, the “ranchero” cuisine has a Mexican influence, and many dishes are grilled over Californian oak. Dinner Wednesday-Monday, Brunch Saturday & Sunday

Bettina: If you love pizza (who doesn’t?!), try Bettina in the Montecito Country Mart. The charming, Italian-inflected eatery recently earned the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand endorsement for their creative, mouth-watering, wood-fired pizzas. The dough is fermented for 48 hours, the mozzarella is handmade, and produce comes from the farmers’ market. They even offer a gluten free crust option and a cheese-free rosso pizza for vegans. Barbareno: What we love about Barbareno is their unique twist on hyper-local Central Coast cuisine and the cozy downtown neighborhood atmosphere. They look as far back as the area’s original inhabitants, the Chumash Native American Indians, when developing the menu. You can try pasta with acorn, Santa Maria Style BBQ, and fresh local catch, among other seasonal, locally sourced goodness. Dinner Wednesday-Sunday

Aperitivo: One of the newest hot spots to open recently is Aperitivo. Tucked on Haley Street downtown, this intimate Italian themed wine bar has extraordinarily tasty small plates. The pasta is handmade, there’s always fresh crudo on the menu, and the bread that serves as the base for their bruschetta offerings is made especially for Aperitivo by their neighbor, Oat Bakery. This is one place where you can’t make a reservation, so go on the earlier side to try to score a spot (they open at 4:00 p.m.). Dinner Wednesday-Saturday

Bibi Ji: Bibi Ji was an instant hit when it opened in 2018, becoming Santa Barbara’s first modern Indian restaurant. In addition to the vibrant, flavorful, very sharable cuisine made with local bounty, Bibi Ji also features a wine and beer list curated by co-owner Rajat Parr, a James Beard-award winning sommelier. The ambiance is hip and fun, and if you need yet another reason to put Bibi Ji on your list, it recently earned MICHELIN’s Bib Gourmand status, too.

Bouchon: Our longtime restaurant partner Bouchon keeps getting better with age. As one of Santa Barbara’s original wine country cuisine restaurants, you’ll be hard pressed to find a wine list that reflects the local wine industry in a more comprehensive and compelling way. Chef/owner Alberto Morello is a native of Sicily and his refined restaurant in the historic theatre district has been a staple of Santa Barbara’s dining scene since 1999. Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro – Renaud’s is renowned for their croissants and authentic French pastries that might just transport you to Paris. They also offer a made-to-order menu with heartier temptations such as Renaud’s signature omelet, fried egg sandwiches and quiche. You have three locations to choose from—Arlington Plaza downtown, Loreto Plaza uptown and Coast Village Plaza in Montecito.

Handlebar Coffee – Coffee connoisseurs beeline to Handlebar, who have two locations—one on De La Vina Street (not far from Best Western Plus Santa Barbara) and the other on Canon Perdido across from the Presidio. You can’t go wrong with a drip coffee or espresso drinks here. When it comes to food, they have a nice selection of pastries, croissant sandwiches, savory scones and avocado toast.

Live Oak Café – Live Oak Café is a gem of a restaurant at the Best Western Plus Santa Barbara. Not your ordinary hotel café, this collaboration between Chef Mark Dela Cruz and owner Molly Holveck is a true labor of local love. And their breakfast game is as strong as the coffee! Fan favorites include the Lemon Brioche French Toast, Pacific Rim Bacon Fried Rice and Harvest Breakfast Bowl.

Alessia Patisserie – Alessia Patisserie might be newer on the scene, but pastry chef Alessia Guehr has deep roots in the community—her parents were respected local restaurateurs. Here, the pastry cases are filled with creations that look almost too beautiful to eat. But don’t let that stop you! The made-to-order breakfast menu features a Croque Monsieur, French Omelette and Blue Crab Crepes, alongside sinfully sweet concoctions like Gone Bananas.

Jeannine’s – Jeannine’s is a Santa Barbara staple going back 30 years. Today, the breakfast and lunch café has four local locations, including the newest At The Shore, which is in walking and biking distance from our West Beach hotels. The benedicts, Huevos Rancheros and American Breakfast are always solid choices, as are the Breakfast Quesadilla and Chilaquiles.

On the Alley – We love sending our West Beach hotel guests to On the Alley, a quality fast casual spot at the Harbor. Order a Breakfast Burrito, Ty’s Muffin or Waffle Sticks and watch the fishermen bring in their catch. Then walk it off with a stroll along the breakwater, breathing in that fresh sea air.

D’Angelo Bakery – D’Angelo Bakery is tucked off State Street on Gutierrez Street—when you smell the bread baking, you’ll know you’re on the right track. Their hot breakfasts featuring freshly baked breads are the way to go. The ever-popular Eggs “Rose” features poached eggs atop kalamata toast, while their tasty spins on a variety of benedicts are served on sourdough and baguettes.

Scarlett Begonia – Located in the historic theatre district, Scarlett Begonia puts a distinctly southern spin on breakfast. Think Shrimp & Grits, Steak & Eggs and—of course—biscuits. The Green Rancheros and Soft Scrambled Eggs are equally addictive. Kids options include Egg-in-the-Hole, French Toast and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

Farmer Boy – Dating back to 1958, Farmer Boy is an updated uptown classic. You’ll get authentic, old school diner vibes with elevated breakfast fare made with quality ingredients. You surely won’t be disappointed if you go for the Santa Barbara Local Omelet (add the tri-tip!), Chicken Fried Steak, Pancake Combo, Carnitas Chilaquiles or Breakfast Burger.

Helena Avenue Bakery – Last but not least, Helena Avenue Bakery is our go-to breakfast joint the Funk Zone. For simple perfection, try the Wildflower Honey Ricotta on Sourdough Toast or a Buttermilk Biscuit with Salted Butter and Jam. Fall is the most exciting time of year to visit Santa Barbara’s wine country. Harvest is in full swing, and vineyards and production facilities are all abuzz with activity. When the timing and conditions are just right, grapes get picked and brought in to start the process of crushing, pressing, and fermenting. For wine tasters, the season comes with the added benefit of near perfect weather—mild, warm sunny days and crisp, cool evenings. The foliage in the vineyards turns from lush green to gorgeous hues of gold, orange, and fiery red. And local farms sell pumpkins, squash, and other autumnal delights. Our hotels make great bases for wine touring and tasting in the Santa Ynez, Lompoc, and Santa Maria Valleys, where the grapes are grown and more than 100 tasting rooms are open to visitors. You can also taste at urban wineries located just blocks away from our beach properties. Following are five unique ways to experience the spirit of harvest season firsthand this fall.

#1: Listen to Live Music: Several wineries enhance the tasting experience with a live entertainment pairing. In the Funk Zone, Pali Wine Company hosts bands every Friday evening. McClain Cellars hosts regular live music nights at their new Solvang tasting lounge. Carhartt Family Wines hosts Friday Night Music sessions in their rustic chic cabin in Los Olivos. Brick Barn Wine Estate hosts Wine Down Wednesday evenings featuring local musicians as well as live music under the oaks on Sunday afternoons. Zaca Mesa Winery also hosts live music Sunday afternoons.

#2: Plan a DIY Los Olivos Tasting Stroll: The Los Olivos Promenade is home to a big concentration of more than 20 fantastic wine tasting rooms in a very charming, walkable four-block village with old-timey atmosphere. You can easily spend a whole day or afternoon wine tasting, shopping the boutiques, and sampling the many delicious eateries including Nella, Bar Le Cote, Los Olivos Café, and Panino.

#3: Arrange Private Vineyard Tastings: Several wineries don’t have public tasting rooms and instead offer by-appointment-only tastings, which are generally private or entail a lot of social distance between parties. These highly memorable experiences can include walks through the vineyards, meeting the winemakers, and tours of the production facilities. Some of our favorites include Demetria Estate, Crown Point Vineyards, Pence Vineyards & Winery, and Happy Canyon Vineyard’s Estate.

#4: Learn to Taste Like a Pro: Dana V. Wines in Solvang offers an educational series hosted by Crush It Wine Education. The entertaining and interactive one-hour classes are held Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. and are ideal for those newer to the world of wine. You’ll learn the nuances of tasting and the basics of wine making as you go through a flight of Dana V. Wines.

Santa Barbara has played a supporting role in the film industry for more than a century. Back in the early 1900s, drawn by the diverse landscapes and temperate climate, Flying A Studios set up shop here and produced thousands of films, ranging from silent films to westerns. Eventually, the film industry would head south to Los Angeles when Hollywood became the epicenter of the film world it is today. More movie stars flock to Santa Barbara during the long-running annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), which returns for its 37^th year March 2-12, 2022. SBIFF is a key stop on the Hollywood awards circuit leading up to the Academy Awards. It features 11 days of star-studded events, film screenings, panel discussions and parties. What makes SBIFF so special for film fans is that all of the events are accessible to the public—tickets and passes are available for purchase online.

SBIFF offers an exciting opportunity to see and hear from your favorite actors and directors. For a city of its modest size, Santa Barbara is fortunate to attract a line-up of the world’s top musical talent who run the gamut of genres—from pop, Latin and rock to opera, classical and country. A big part of the appeal for artists is the quality of our distinctive venues, many of which are historic and architecturally significant. Concertgoers benefit from the intimate size of these venues beloved by performers, be it the 4,562-seat Santa Barbara Bowl or the 604-seat Lobero Theatre. Santa Barbara Bowl

The Santa Barbara Bowl is a community treasure dating back to 1936. An outdoor amphitheater perched in the scenic foothills of the Riviera neighborhood, the Bowl’s season typically runs from May through October. They host some of the biggest names in music, many of whom specially request a tour stop in Santa Barbara because they love playing the venue so much. Think Radiohead, Katy Perry, Van Morrison, The Chicks and Rod Stewart, to name just a handful. Granada Theatre

The tallest building in Santa Barbara standing at eight stories, the Granada Theatre has been a local landmark for nearly a century. Originally built in 1924, it survived the 1925 earthquake that transformed Santa Barbara into the architectural masterpiece it is today. The theatre underwent a massive, multi-year renovation in the early aughts and reopened in 2008 as the state-of-the-art Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts, serving as home venue to the Santa Barbara Symphony, Opera Santa Barbara and State Street Ballet, among others. The venue also welcomes touring acts. Fall shows on the calendar include Opera Santa Barbara’s Tosca (Oct. 1), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Oct. 10), Santa Barbara Symphony’s season opening production of Carmina Burana in partnership with State Street Ballet (Oct. 15 & 16), Scott Bradlee’s Post Modern Jukebox (Nov. 16), Santa Barbara Symphony’s Chumash tribute Wisdom of Sky, Water, Earth (Nov. 19 & 20) and guitar great Joe Bonamassa (Nov. 22).

Lobero Theatre

Founded in 1873 by Jose Lobero, the Lobero Theatre is California’s oldest continually operating theatre. This intimate venue hosts local and national performers and produces their own annual concert seasons including Jazz at the Lobero and Lobero Live. The Arlington Theatre

SOhO Restaurant & Music Club

A staple of Santa Barbara’s music scene, SOhO Restaurant & Music Club is a family-run business dedicated to providing a stage for live music nearly every night of the week. The intimate downtown venue tucked in Victoria Court welcomes artists of all genres, including up-and-comers and established rock stars. A small sampling of hot tickets this fall include Skip Marley (Oct. 4), Henry Rollins (Oct. 6), Shwayze (Oct. 8), Margo Cilker (Oct. 20), The Dip (Nov. 10) and Phantoms (Dec. 8). Here, it’s also a perk that you can book dinner and a show if you make reservations in advance.

Music Academy of the West

We can’t talk about Santa Barbara’s live music opportunities without highlighting Music Academy of the West in Montecito. Considered one of the country’s preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classically trained musicians, the Music Academy’s premier public offerings run June through August. Some shows take place on their campus and others are held in downtown venues including the Santa Barbara Bowl. They do maintain a year-round presence in the community and the occasional public performance is staged at Hahn Hall on their gorgeous grounds.

Other Music Venues

Several local restaurants, bars and breweries offer live music on a regular basis throughout the year. For example, Third Window Brewing typically hosts live music Sunday afternoons and PALI Wine Company in the Funk Zone hosts Live Music Fridays. Santa Barbara Sailing Center’s Double Dolphin curates Live Music on the Water cruises Friday evenings May through the end of October. Electronic DJs make appearances at venues such as the Wildcat Lounge and EOS Lounge alike. Last but not least, downtown State Street’s lounge, The Red Piano, showcases live music seven days a week with indoor and outdoor performance areas.

Winter may be considered the “off-season” in Santa Barbara, but there’s nothing sleepy about it. Sure, you can find peace, quiet, and solitude if that’s what you’re seeking. But there’s also tons of events, activities, and goings on that make it prime time for a visit packed with culinary, outdoor, and cultural adventures. Following are 10 reasons Santa Barbara should be on your winter travel agenda.

The Weather: Santa Barbara averages more than 300 days of sunshine a year. The Mediterranean climate means we have very moderate weather and it’s not uncommon to have sunbathing, beachgoing weather in January and February. Average temperatures in winter months range from highs in the mid- to upper-60s and lows in the 40s. So, you can still enjoy cozy winter evening vibes bundled up by a fire while also getting your fill of Vitamin D in short sleeves during the day.

Santa Barbara International Film Festival: Get your cinematic fix when the Santa Barbara International Film Festival takes over the historic theatres and venues in our dynamic downtown cultural district. Toast the Winemakers: Santa Barbara County was recently named Wine Enthusiast’s “2021 Wine Region of the Year” for its pioneering role in sustainable winemaking as well as the high concentration of female winemakers—among other factors like the delicious, fine wines. With the busy harvest season complete, come winter many winemakers have the time to be onsite in the tasting room personally sharing the fruits of their labor with guests. So, whether you opt to go to wine country or to taste along Santa Barbara’s urban wine trail, your chances of getting to meet the makers themselves are the highest at this time of year.

Plan a Craft Beer Crawl: Wine isn’t the only locally made libation making headlines. Santa Barbara’s craft beer scene is thriving. In downtown Santa Barbara alone there are several spots to try local brews. Labels to look for include Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co., Topa Topa Brewing Co., Brass Bear Brewing, Rincon Brewing, Pure Order Brewing Co., Third Window Brewing Co., Night Lizard, and Institution Ale.

Catch a Show: The performing arts calendar really heats up in winter months, offering great opportunities to experience world-class culture in our beautiful historic theatres. The Granada is hosting a Broadway in Santa Barbara series featuring “The Simon & Garfunkel Story” (Jan. 5), “Waitress” (Jan 18 & 19), and “Jersey Boys” (Feb. 22 & 23). You can also catch several compelling performances presented by the Santa Barbara Symphony, Community Arts & Music Association, and UCSB Arts & Lectures at The Granada. Our local Ensemble Theater Company presents “Carmen Jones” (Feb. 3-20) at the New Vic. Savor Winter Flavors: Santa Barbara is surrounded by organic farms and the Harbor is home to the state’s top producing commercial fishing fleet, so our cuisine scene is excellent all year round. Winter menus feature seasonal ingredients like vibrant citrus, earthy root vegetables, and hearty squash alongside seafood specialties like ridgeback shrimp, spiny lobster, and spot prawns. You can stroll through the Tuesday and Saturday Farmers’ Markets, where the people watching is just as good as the produce picking. We also love sending guests to the Fisherman’s Market held at the Harbor on Saturday mornings.

Blaze Trails: You’ll find that our hiking trails are less crowded during the winter. There’s no better way to greet a new day than a sunrise stroll through the coastal Douglas Preserve or a morning hike to Inspiration Point. Watch Whales: California Grey Whales pass through the Santa Barbara Channel during their migration that begins in February, and they can typically be spotted in our local waters through April. From its inception, Santa Barbara Hotel Collection has been a family business at heart. Founders Pamela and David Webber bought their first hotel here in 1962 and raised their children Jeanette and Philip immersed in local hospitality. Today, Jeanette Webber remains at the helm of our four-property hotel collection, ensuring her parents’ legacy of family-style hospitality lives on. Providing visitors with a “home away from home” atmosphere over the decades has instilled strong customer loyalty and inspired countless positive reviews at Best Western Plus Santa Barbara, Brisas Del Mar Inn By the Beach, Inn by the Harbor, and Lavender Inn by the Sea.

Santa Barbara Hotel Collection treats employees like members of the family, too. That comes through in the way employees treat guests and the pride they take in their work—whether they specialize in maintenance, housekeeping, gardening, management, sales, or guest services. That high level of job satisfaction and a healthy work environment has resulted in several children following in their parents’ footsteps, taking advantage of rewarding employment opportunities at our properties. We think that generational story is a rare and special one and wanted to share some of them with you through the lens of a couple of our newer, younger team members.

Cristina Vera’s father Antonio has been a part of our engineering department for more than 40 years. She joined our team in May 2021 and works at the front desk of the Best Western Plus Santa Barbara, helping guests book reservations and check in and out. She was drawn to the company by the friendliness and a desire to pursue a career in hospitality. When asked what has surprised her the most, she said it was how many people know her dad. The most rewarding part of the job for her so far is “hearing the positive feedback from guests.” Favorite Santa Barbara activities she recommends to guests is going down to explore the Harbor and touring local historic landmarks like the Mission and Presidio.

Kimberly Quezada Carrillo’s father Manuel worked for Santa Barbara Hotel Collection for three decades. She grew up around the hotels and saw the properties evolve over the years. “As I got older, I would become even more excited knowing that one day I would be able to work for a company that has given my family so much,” she recalled. In May 2022, Kimberly was hired as a front desk agent at the Best Western Plus Santa Barbara. In addition to checking guests in and out, she ensures guests are comfortable and makes frequent trips to rooms to provide items guests request. Seeing smiles on guests’ faces is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. “Something so simple as delivering additional shampoo makes guests feel happy and valued,” she said. “Taking an extra step to accommodate guests goes an extremely long way.”

When asked what inspires her own loyalty to Santa Barbara Hotel Collection, Kimberly answered, “My dad dedicated 30 years to the company, and it was very rewarding for him.” She elaborated, “Santa Barbara Hotel Collection is special because they are willing to take a chance on you. As a college student, I noticed that people were hesitant to hire me, but here there was no hesitation. They were more than excited to let me join the team and were thrilled to see me grow in the professional world.”

Kimberly and Cristina both remarked that they feel like members of a family at Santa Barbara Hotel Collection and how valued they feel for their contributions and talents. “The warmth that is associated with home is what attracted me to the Santa Barbara Hotel Collection properties,” Kimberly summed up.

The Funk Zone

Traditionally an industrial part of Santa Barbara, the converted warehouse spaces and hidden streets of the Funk Zone are fast becoming one of the most popular neighborhoods in town. Margerum: Owned by a family with a long-standing history and great reputation in the Santa Barbara Wine community, be sure to stop by Margerum and try their famous M5 wine, a rhone style blend, that is one of our favorites.

Au Bon Climat: An esteemed producer and curator of fine Pinot Noirs, visit this tasting room for their extensive collection of library wines.

Grassini Family Winery: With rustic reclaimed wood bar tops, a crackling fireplace, and a cozy outdoor patio, this tasting room is as cozy as they come and features only estate wines from the Happy Canyon AVA.

Deep Sea Winery: You can’t beat the location of this winery. Sitting on Stearn’s Wharf, grab a glass or two with your friends and family and take in the cool, coastal breezes and scenic Riviera views.

Experience Santa Barbara Car-free & Save

One of the things our guests love most about Santa Barbara is how easy it is to get around without a car. Now, that’s not to say everyone arrives without a car! But, whether you arrive via train, plane or automobile, once you check in, so much is accessible on foot. Add public transportation, ride share services, guided tours and our beach hotels’ fleet of bikes to the mix, and there’s really no need to get behind the wheel.

Amtrak is a particularly attractive transportation option for our guests who live along the Pacific Surfliner route, stretching from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and Ventura County in the south all the way up to San Luis Obispo in the north. Even better yet, Amtrak gives guests access to a 20% roundtrip fare discount if you register through the Santa Barbara Car Free Project site at least three days in advance of your trip. And Santa Barbara Hotel Collection will put a cherry on top of that with a discount of 15% off our best available at the time of booking. So, not only will your budget get a boost, you’ll also be treading extra lightly on the environment.

Our three beach hotels—Lavender Inn by the Sea, Inn by the Harbor and Brisas Del Mar Inn at the Beach—are located just three, easily-walkable blocks from the Transportation Center, the Santa Barbara Amtrak stop. For guests of our Best Western Plus Santa Barbara property, we provide complimentary pick-up and drop-off shuttle service between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. daily. (We also offer free airport transfers for our guests arriving by air.)

Once you’re settled in at the accommodations of your choice, Santa Barbara is your oyster. Beach hotel guests can hop on our complimentary bikes and take a spin around town to get oriented. The waterfront Cabrillo Bike Path will lead you to the Harbor in one direction or Stearns Wharf and East Beach in the other. You can do a more ambitious loop following the scenic route signs to the Bird Refuge and then on to Butterfly Beach. From there, cruise along Coast Village Road in Montecito—perhaps stopping for a coffee, lunch or a browse in Montecito Country Mart—and loop back to the hotel.

You can bike or walk to the Harbor for fresh catch, a walk along the Breakwater and sea-faring excursions. Whale watching and sunset cruises depart from SEA Landing, where you can also rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. If you’re a runner, start your day with a sunrise run up to Santa Barbara City College where you can work up a sweat doing a few rounds of stadium steps before the glorious downhill stretch back to the hotel.

Beach days can be enjoyed at Leadbetter Beach, an easy walk or bike ride from the beach properties as well. Culture, wine and food lovers have the Funk Zone nearby—the lively, artsy neighborhood is home to a big concentration of Urban Wine Trail wineries as well as vibrant murals and great coffee shops, bakeries, delis, restaurants and taquerias. A collection of seafood restaurants also line Cabrillo Boulevard, along with some Italian gems, offering many options for romantic dinners and al fresco lunches.

If you’re newer to Santa Barbara, consider taking one of the informative Free Santa Barbara Walking Tours. These guided neighborhood journeys are filled with history and fascinating local trivia and concentrate on three different areas: The Funk Zone, Waterfront and Lower Downtown. Reservations are recommended and while the tours are technically free a gratuity for your guide is highly encouraged!

If you’re traveling with kids, MOXI – The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation is a must-stop on lower State Street. So is the newly reopened Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center on Stearns Wharf. Kids will also get a kick out of a ride on the Lil’ Toot water taxi that travels between Stearns Wharf and the Harbor—the captain will often invite them to take the helm for a quick spell, too!

The Downtown State Street retail and entertainment district is also in walking and biking distance from the beach properties (it’s a bit longer of a walk compared to the waterfront area). There, you’ll find an abundance of shops and restaurants as you stroll along the State Street Promenade. Head just a block or two off State and you’ll discover historic and architectural landmarks like El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park and the stunning Santa Barbara County Courthouse—the clocktower recently reopened to visitors, offering amazing sweeping city views. If you find yourself carrying too many shopping bags after a successful retail mission, simply grab an Uber or Lyft back to your hotel. Ride share services are also convenient if you’re enjoying restaurants and nightlife after the sun goes down.

Guests of Best Western Plus Santa Barbara can take advantage of being walking distance to Mission Santa Barbara and the beautiful rose garden that sits across from it, with ample lawn space for picnicking and fun and games. If you like to walk, this property is just one mile from the heart of the theatre district at the upper end of the State Street Promenade. Get your cultural fix in Santa Barbara this autumn

Fall is traditionally the kick-off to a fresh slate of cultural happenings and art exhibitions here on The American Riviera. This autumn promises to be extra special as our arts institutions open their doors to visitors once again. If you’re looking for a fix of culture, follow our mini-guide to what’s on show at Santa Barbara’s art museums and galleries this fall into winter.

Perhaps the hottest ticket of all is the prestigious Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA), which reopened in August 2021 after the completion of a major $50 million renovation. Celebrating its 80^th anniversary this year, SBMA now features new gallery spaces and a completely new installation of its permanent 27,000-piece collection of 27,000. The original 1912 structure was expanded through a meticulous architectural project that took six years, creating space for new galleries dedicated to photography, contemporary art, and new media—among other reimagined public spaces.

The inaugural contemporary art installation features a shining mirrored orb by Anish Kapoor, a neon piece by Laddie John Dill, and paintings by noteworthy artists such as Kori Newkirk, Dorothy Hood, Helen Frankenthaler, and Roger Shimomura. Currently on display in the photography gallery is Facing Forward: Portraits from the Collection, showcasing 25 works drawn from SBMA’s renowned collection of photographs including works by Kwame Brathwaite, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Genevieve Gaignard, and Tseng Kwong Chi. In the new media gallery, find Mediated Nature, a curation of video works that explore how the contemporary experience of nature has been shaped and influenced by current media technologies. And if you’re planning ahead, mark your calendar for a 2022 visit to coincide with SBMA’s upcoming temporary exhibition, Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources, on displayfrom February 27 to May 22, 2022.

SBMA currently encourages booking tickets online in advance through their timed ticketing system. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and offers free admission to the public every Thursday evening during its extended hours from 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Just across the street from SBMA is Sullivan Goss Gallery, where you can catch Paper Trail: The Life Story of Great Works of Art through October 25. The temporary exhibition features both historic and contemporary works that have been made in important ateliers, owned by important art world figures, exhibited in museums, or published in magazines and catalogues. The gallery is also pleased to show its first Non Fungible Token (NFT) digital work as part of this robust exhibit. Sullivan Goss specializes in American art and always has works on display and for sale; the locally owned gallery is open daily and features many local artists like Hank Pitcher, Erika Carter, and Nicole Strasburg.

The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery is another leading local fine art dealer with a specialty for discovering emerging artists. Open every day but Sundays, you can pop into the Gutierrez Street space for an inspired look at the works of new talent. Neighboring the Arlington Theatre is Santa Barbara Fine Art Gallery, which is now showing a collection of works by artist Michael Enriquez, Sense of Place, through November 3. Santa Barbara Fine Art Gallery is dedicated to local artists that capture Santa Barbara’s sense of place—many artists represented are from the celebrated Oak Group and this is your spot to find landscape paintings in particular.

If you’re after the cutting-edge, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) is open Thursdays through Sundays and rotates the exhibits in its three gallery spaces a few times a year. Their next big showcase is a solo exhibition featuring Los Angeles-based artist, Rosha Yaghmai. Her work will be on view from October 23, 2021, through January 9, 2022. Yaghmai’s pieces explore psychedelic themes that include feelings of transcendence and otherness. Her sculptural practice melds industrial and craft processes, and integrates materials such as silicon, resin, cast plaster, and fiberglass. You can find MCASB on the upper level of the Paseo Nuevo shopping mall and we love that admission is free!

Over in wine country, the charming Wildling Museum in Solvang focuses on the art of nature. The museum just debuted a new exhibit on display through March 20, 2022, Sharing the Light: Ansel Adams & Alan Ross, exploring the American West through the lenses of photographers Ansel Adams and Alan Ross. Another new exhibit on display through January 16, 2022, Sewjourners: Trees is the Museum’s first textile-focused exhibition. It features the Coastal Quilters Guild artists’ unique interpretations of trees through the medium of quilting. The Wildling is open Fridays through Sundays.

For a less formal arts experience, wander around the Funk Zone admiring the street art. And every Sunday you can catch the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show on the waterfront Cabrillo Boulevard, where local artists and craftspeople working across a diversity of mediums display and sell their wares.

After a morning of discovery, explore more of Santa Barbara with your stomach. The Santa Barbara taco trail is a great way to literally eat your way through the city and enjoy the authentic Mexican cuisine Santa Barbara is known for. After lunch, make your way to East beach, where you can simply relax, build sand castles or go for a dip in the salty ocean water.

For dinner, we recommend a visit to Lucky Penny. Located in the Funk Zone, a lively neighborhood full of street art, and the best eateries, wineries, and breweries. The wood fired pizzas at Lucky Penny are widely beloved and often referred to as the best local pizza.

Day 3: The Santa Barbara Zoo

In Santa Barbara you won’t have to go far to see wildlife of all kinds. The Santa Barbara Zoo is well known and loved by locals and guests alike. Explore the 30 acres of exhibits and learn about the 500 animals that call the zoo home, including giraffes, elephants, and lions. See if you can feed the giraffes or join in one of the many activities that the zoo hosts every day.

After a day well spent at the zoo, head to the Santa Barbara Public Market for dinner. The Public Market is a contemporary urban eatery with a diverse array of food vendors. Sip & Sparkle
Champagne and sparkling wines are another aphrodisiac—and also pair very well with oysters! If you’re more interested in the bubbles, head to the Funk Zone for a glass or tasting flight at Riverbench, one of the region’s top producers of sparkling wines. Santa Barbara Wine Collective also offers a sparkling flight featuring local producers, while tasting rooms like Melville, Kunin Wines and Santa Barbara Winery typically pour their sparkling wines while supplies last.

Picnic Perfection
Santa Barbara’s parks are prime picnicking grounds. Live Oak – Style Brunch at Home

Hey friends, we miss seeing you and serving you! These times require us to stay at home for our own health and for the good of our community. While we’re at home, making something new in the kitchen is a great way to spark joy.

Today, we’re sharing Live Oak Cafe’s famous benedict recipe. Even better, Live Oak is currently selling their house made Maple Espresso Bacon for at-home enjoyment. This bacon is vacuum sealed and ready for your fridge or buy a few packages and stock up your freezer.

Read below to learn how to make a restaurant-style eggs benedict from the comfort of your home.

Start by making a batch of Live Oak Hollandaise:

1 large Egg Yolk
1 tbs Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp White Vinegar
1 tsp Cholula (or preferred hot sauce, can add more or less depending on preference)
3/8 tsp Salt
Pinch of Pepper
8 oz. Unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions:

Melt butter and set aside. In a food processor or blender, mix together everything except butter. Blend well. Slowly add butter while mixing. The consistency should start to get thick, continue to blend for about 2 more minutes.

How to build a Live Oak Benedict:

1) Toast 1 piece of bread

2) In a pan or grill with a little bit of olive oil, start grilling 2 pieces of thick cut tomatoes over medium heat. Add a pinch of salt and pepper as they cook. You want the tomatoes cooked through, but not burned so watch them close.

3) Poach 2 eggs (or cook any way you like).

4) Over medium heat, cook 2 pieces of Maple Espresso Bacon. Our bacon is hot smoked so it is fully cooked making for a quick cook. Just brown on both sides (the maple syrup and coffee caramelizes nice and quick).

5) Put it all together: cut the toast in half on the diagonal and place a handful of arugula on each side. Add your grilled tomatoes on top of the arugula. Cut each piece of bacon in half and lay them crosswise on each of your grilled tomatoes. Next add the eggs with a scoop of hollandaise over each.

Hit the Trails

Santa Barbara is home to a hiking trail network that spans 50 miles from the Santa Ynez Mountains and foothills to the coast. As this fascinating article in the Santa Barbara Independent reveals, some date back as far as 1860! The Sage Trail Alliance, whose important work helps to preserve trails, hosts a comprehensive map of the local trail networks. Family-friendly hikes and nature walks include Ellwood Mesa, the Douglas Family Preserve, Hot Springs and San Antonio Creek Trail.

Ride Bikes

Santa Barbara is one of the country’s most bike-friendly destinations given our dedicated bike paths and bike lanes, as well as the relatively flat downtown and waterfront districts. Our beach hotels offer complimentary bikes for guest use and vendors like Wheel Fun Rentals offer a range of bike rentals—from surreys and city bikes outfitted with child seats to cruisers and electric bikes. Speaking of electric bikes, the whole community is excited about the recent addition of Bcyle Santa Barbara, a bike share program with 80 stations around the city (note the size of these bikes are more appropriate for teens or taller children).

See Cetaceans

November through April is peak grey whale watching season in the nutrient-rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Spring through fall is when the majestic, massive humpback and blue whales take their turn migrating by. And dolphins can be seen frolicking in the waves all year round. Sometimes you can spot whales and dolphins right from the beach or elevated perches like Shoreline Park. But the most incredible way to see these creatures up close is a whale watching excursion, be it by high-speed catamaran or sailboat. Garden Hop

Learn about the natural world meandering around the always educational Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, which showcases the vast diversity of native California landscapes, from redwood forests and deserts to our fragrant Central Coast chaparral. Alice Keck Park is home to a tranquil butterfly garden as well as a sensory garden especially created for the visually and physically impaired. There’s also a self-guided tree and plant tour that you can turn into a scavenger-style hunt to identify the 75 different species throughout the city park. The Sunken Gardens at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse are prime picnic grounds, as is the Mission Rose Garden lawn. Older children will appreciate the extraordinary gardens of Lotusland in Montecito.

Play in Parks

When it comes to parks with playgrounds and other fun features, Kids World is one of the most popular among local families. Waterfront Chase Palm Park has a shipwreck themed playground. The 230-acre Elings Park has two playgrounds—one for kids ages two to five and the other for ages two to 12. There’s also a BMX track and a paragliding and hang gliding launch for the more adventurous—or something cool to watch as a spectator!

Be Beachy

You can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned beach day. Our beach properties are walking distance to West Beach, and East Beach is just a short drive or bike away. Arroyo Burro Beach is perfect for a long beach walk followed by meal at Boathouse Restaurant. Explore more remote-feeling beaches like Mesa Lane (also known as Thousand Steps Beach), Miramar Beach in Montecito, Summerland Beach and Refugio State Beach up the coast.

Get on the Water

One of the best ways to bond is to share an active adventure like kayaking, stand up paddle boarding or surf lessons. Santa Barbara Adventure Company is a go-to outfitter for kayaking trips (ages 5+) and two-hour surf lessons (ages 7+). Santa Barbara Sailing Center rents kayaks and paddle boards. For a big thrill, kids as young as two years old can go up with parents on a flight with Santa Barbara Parasail.

Giddy Up

Why not spend a couple of hours connecting with animals on a guided horseback ride? Los Padres Outfitters (ages 10+) leads rides on Summerland Beach. #1 Picnic at Franchesci Park: William at Inn by the Harbor

First, make a stop at Lazy Acres – a small health foods store on the mesa – to pick up your favorite picnic items. Think: local fruit, charcuterie, wine, fresh baked breads…..Mmmm…..Now, that you have some treats – drive the spectacular APS (Alameda Padre Serra) for huge Riviera views until you reach your final destination – Franchesci Park. Tucked in the hills behind downtown, this park is a true, hidden gem and will give you a whole new perspective on just how beautiful Santa Barbara truly is.

#2 Dine at Shalhoob’s Meat Co.: Jarrod at BW Plus Pepper Tree Inn

The Patio at Shalhoob’s might be a new addition to the ever growing Funk Zone, but don’t let that fool you – Shalhoobs has been a family owned business in Santa Barbara since 1973. Their focus on high quality meats and really exceptional BBQ is a very welcome addition to Santa Barbara’s restaurant scene. Spanish Days

The Spanish were the first Europeans to colonize Santa Barbara back in 1782, when Spain founded the Presidio of Santa Barbara, and as a result, Santa Barbara’s architecture is deeply influenced by Spain. Visiting landmarks like El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park and Mission Santa Barbara bring that early Spanish history to life. The community celebrates its Spanish heritage every August during the colorful five-day Old Spanish Days Fiesta, filled with food, parades, dancing, rodeo, and more local traditions.

Southern California’s first shopping center opened in the 1920s, the historic El Paseo’s “Street in Spain” was designed to look like Seville, Spain. Today, you can meander through the paseo’s many pathways while stopping to browse the shops, taste wines, and dine at restaurants like Intermezzo by Wine Cask and the namesake El Paseo Restaurant & Bar.

Taste of Italy

Over the decades, Santa Barbara has attracted many Italian immigrants who feel quite at home here. One of the most famous is internationally renowned horticulturalist, Dr. Francesco Franceschi, who spent 20 years as a Santa Barbara resident beginning in 1893. Franceschi took advantage of Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean climate to test the suitability of growing diverse plants from around the world here, and he is credited with altering California’s landscape through his work—as well as for naming Santa Barbara’s “Riviera” neighborhood, where he built a home, nursery, and botanic garden on 40 acres. Today, you can visit Franceschi Park, which occupies a portion of the very land where he once lived, and admire the remaining plantings and sweeping views of the city-to-the-sea below.

Naturally, one of the most pleasurable ways to taste the Italian influence in Santa Barbara is through our delicious Italian cuisine and Italian-style wines. Arnoldi’s (founded in 1937), Olio e Limone, and Pane e Vino are three longtime local favorites serving up authentic Italian ambiance. We also love sending our beach hotel guests to top-rated Toma Restaurant, just blocks away from Brisas Del Mar Inn at the Beach, Inn by the Harbor, and Lavender Inn By the Sea. Newcomer Aperitivo Wine Bar is also well worth frequenting for Italian wines and creative small plates.

Several local winemakers have Italian roots as well and embrace the region’s agreeable growing climate for Italian varietals. Try a tasting at Ca’ del Gravino in Los Olivos, Palmina Wines in Lompoc, or Grassini Family Vineyards in downtown Santa Barbara.

Your Tour de Italy should also include some souvenir shopping at the Italian Pottery Outlet so you can bring a piece of Italy home with you. The family run business has been importing goods from Umbria, Tuscany, and Sicily dating back to 1982.

French Twist

Santa Barbara is probably most compared to the South of France from an aesthetic point of view, down to the fact that flying into Santa Barbara Airport looks quite similar to flying into Nice. Like Cannes, we have our own Santa Barbara International Film Festival that draws the film world’s top talent for 10 days of screenings and red carpet events. A local Frenchman helped found the annual Santa Barbara French Festival that coincides with Bastille Day and has been running for over 30 years.

Eateries where you’ll find the strongest French influence include Petit Valentien in La Arcada, Stella Mare’s Bistro near the Bird Refuge, and Bell’s in Los Alamos. Many Santa Barbara County wineries specialize in Rhône varietals, which thrive thanks to the similar landscape and climate. The fruits of French winemaking can also be sampled at Crown Point Vineyards in Happy Canyon, whose wines are crafted by a team of three esteemed French winemakers.

If we’re lucky, we’ll even get the occasional rainy day, which locals love for the change in mood and an excuse to get cozy—but you can’t keep us indoors for long! The American Riviera lifestyle is all about relishing in the great outdoors. And for the many active seniors and snowbirds who flock to our sandy shores during winter, there’s plenty of soft adventure and fresh air fun on tap to keep you feeling fit and energized. Following are 10 ways to make the most of Santa Barbara’s epic landscapes and revitalize mind, body and spirit this winter.

Lawn Bowling: Santa Barbara is home to two lawn bowl clubs whose welcome visiting players.Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club (1216 De La Vina) charges a nominal $5 a day including loaner balls. Mackenzie Park Lawn Bowls Club (Samarkand Drive) offers free lessons for those new to lawn bowling and requires a nominal fee to play as well.
Golf: Golfers swoon over our top-rated courses like Sandpiper Golf Club and Glen Annie Golf Club—both located in Goleta with awe-inspiring ocean and mountain views. Closer to our hotels in town, Santa Barbara Golf Club is the community’s public course known for its challenging play and affordable rates. Over in wine country, the River Course at the Alisal is another beautiful spot to play—and why not fit in some wine tasting afterwards?!
Tennis & Pickleball: The pickleball craze is alive and well here in Santa Barbara County and tennis remains a classic pastime, too. City Parks & Rec managed courts include Santa Barbara Municipal Tennis Center (1414 Park Place), Oak Park Tennis Courts and Pershing Park Tennis Courts (100 Castillo Street). Note that permits are required and non-resident daily fees are $5.
Bocce Ball: Locals in-the-know head to Arnoldi’sCafé (600 Olive Street) when they feel like pairing classic Italian fare with a game or two of bocce. Check their online schedule for league play info to ensure the two courts won’t be in use on your planned visit if it’s a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
Biking: Complimentary bikes are available for guest use at our beach hotels, which are very close to the waterfront bike paths. For a little extra boost of power to ride farther and longer (and maybe tackle some hills!), electric bike share rentals are available in docks throughout town via Santa Barbara BCycle. Check out the station map to find the location nearest to your hotel.
Birding: Santa Barbara is a true birder’s paradise, so you’ll want to pack those binoculars! Santa Barbara Audubon Society funds the dedicated county birding online guide, which details where and when to find the most fascinating birds from the South and North Coast regions to the wine country and Channel Islands.
Scenic Walks: Lace up your walking shoes for a scenic stroll. Between the hiking trails, bike paths, parks and gardens, you’ll be spoilt for choice of beautiful, serene settings.Montecito’s Ennisbrook Trail is a local secret for a relatively easy walk that’s just under two miles round trip. Perched above Arroyo Burro Beach, the Douglas Family Preserve is another nice, flat option, while Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s 78-acres offers a variety of stone-paved and packed earthen trails through lovely native Californian landscapes (reservations required). And you can’t go wrong with a sunrise or sunset stroll along waterfront Cabrillo Boulevard.
Kayaking: If you’d like to get out on the water, rent a kayak from Santa Barbara Sailing Center or Paddle Sports Center—both down at the Harbor, which is a nice calm place for a paddle. Paddle Sports and Santa Barbara Adventure Company both lead private guided kayak tours for a more in-depth experience peppered with expert local knowledge.
Sailing: Book a sailing cruise with one of our local charter companies to savor fresh sea breezes, dolphin sightings and stunning coastal views. Top options include the Double Dolphin catamaran and the 16-passenger Sunset Kidd.
Lap Swimming By the Sea: While our hotels each have recreational swimming pools, lap swimmers will delight in the public outdoor pool, Los Banos Del Mar, located just a short walk from our beach properties. It’s open for public lap swimming Monday-Friday 7:30-9:00 a.m. and 12:00-2:00 p.m. Night swimmers can hit the pool between 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. And Saturday and Sunday hours are limited to 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

The official Arts-Restaurants-Theater-Shopping District encompasses Chapala, State and Anacapa Streets from Sola down to Figueroa Street. This vibrant downtown area is a hub of arts, entertainment and culture, with an excellent dining scene and impressive concentration of interesting, independent local retailers. It’s always a guaranteed good time, whether wandering around browsing and following your curiosity without a specific agenda or celebrating a special occasion with dinner and a show. Following is our guide to some of the neighborhood’s headliners and highlights.

See & Do

Three historically and architecturally significant theaters anchor the district: Granada Theatre, Arlington Theatre and The New Vic Theatre. These beloved venues play host to touring acts and local performing arts groups—everything from ballet, opera and symphony to rock concerts, lectures and musical theater. The Arlington also shows current movies and serves as the main red-carpet entrance for the highest of high profile Santa Barbara International Film Festival events. Loveworn designer Jill Johnson makes original screen-printed tees that capture her vintage aesthetic (her Funk Zone shop has one of the best selections of vintage Levi’s in the region). Artisan Eats & Sips

Santa Barbara’s natural bounty provides the ingredients for a wide spectrum of locally made consumable goods. If you have a sweet tooth, Jessica Foster Confections and Twenty Four Blackbirds Chocolates are the leading local artisan chocolatiers—Jessica Foster Confections are sold in markets, wineries and gift shops around the county, while Twenty Four Blackbirds has retail boutique at their production facility, which is also open for tours. On the more savory side, Santa Barbara Popcorn Co. makes a range of small-batch gourmet popcorns with California-grown corn. Sustainably minded Sun & Swell Foods specializes in organic, plant-based snacks made with fruits and nuts packaged in compostable bags.

As its name suggests, Pacific Pickle Works is the region’s go-to for pickled veggies and cocktail mixers with a briny twist. Sideyard Shrubs bottles probiotic-rich fruit vinegars made with produce sourced from small organic farms. The shrubs can be used in cocktails, mocktails and salad dressings and the attractive bottles are very giftable.

Of course, Santa Barbara County wine and craft beer make great keepsakes and gifts, too. For a different alcoholic libation, check out Ysidro, a canned sparkling sake-based grapefruit spritz out of Montecito. Carpinteria-based Apiary Co. produces meads and ciders using fermented honey, organic botanicals and apples. Last but not least on the local libations front, Cutler’s Artisan Spirits is Santa Barbara’s signature distiller. Stop by the Funk Zone tasting room to sample gin, whiskey, vodka and liqueurs and purchase bottles to bring home.

Iconic Santa Barbara Originals

If you appreciate an origin story, there are a handful of major chains and widely distributed boutique brands that started right here in Santa Barbara. Drive by the original Motel 6 #1 in the East Beach neighborhood for a photo op. It opened in June of 1962 and has been welcoming travelers ever since. Another American classic launched in Santa Barbara in the early 1970s at the McDonald’s franchise located on upper State Street—the first Egg McMuffin was created and served as a way to open up the breakfast market, and it was such a hit it became a McDonald’s menu staple.

The Habit Burger & Grill, a contemporary burger chain known for its charbroiled flavors, got its start here in 1969, and the original Goleta location at 5735 Hollister Avenue is still serving up burgers, fries, salads and more. The popular Freebirds World Burrito chain started nearby in Isla Vista in 1987, where college students attending UCSB still frequent the original location that remains open 24 hours. It’s the only location among the now national franchise that is still owned by one of its co-founders, Mark Orfalea.

To end on a sweet note, McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams was started by husband and wife, Gordon “Mac” and Ernesteen McConnell, in 1949. They started making small batch ice creams using high quality ingredients sourced from regional farms and dairies and opened their first shop in 1950. Today you can find McConnell’s in grocery store freezers across the country and there are two “scoop shops” in Santa Barbara, among others in California. A more recent local ice cream success story is Rori’s Artisanal Creamery, started by Rori Trovato in 2011. You can also find Rori’s in grocery stores as well as ice cream parlors in Montecito Country Mart and Santa Barbara Public Market.

Step into the courtyard of Best Western Plus Santa Barbara and listen carefully. Tucked between the swimming pool and the Live Oak Café, our zebra finch aviary is one of those rare, unexpected delights that guests remember long after checkout. You’ll hear it before you see it—a cheerful chorus of tiny, insistent beeps, not unlike a miniature rush-hour traffic jam, but infinitely more delightful. Our resident zebra finches have been charming hotel guests for generations, and there’s truly nothing else like it in Santa Barbara.

For the Birds

The hotel’s aviary is home to a lively colony of captivating little zebra finches. The males are the showoffs of the bunch, with bright orange cheeks, vivid red-orange beaks and dapper black-and-white striped chests. Their quieter female companions wear a more understated grey; what they lack in flash, they make up for in personality. Both sport unmistakably fiery eyes that seem to hold the secrets of the universe (or at least an opinion about where you should have breakfast).
