No matter the season in Santa Barbara, rolling green hills and seaside bluffs of the central coast are calling. If you're ready to hit the trail, here are five of the best hikes on the Santa Barbara Central Coast — each with its own character, scenery and level of challenge.

Located within the garden itself, the loop takes you past redwood groves, wildflower meadows and more than 1,000 native California plants. It's a gentle pace, ideal for those who want fresh air and beautiful surroundings without a strenuous climb.

#4: Inspiration Point

For hikers ready to step up the effort a bit, Inspiration Point offers the reward of a sweeping vista over downtown Santa Barbara, the ocean and the distant Channel Islands. The uphill gives you that "earned view" feeling — worth it for the panorama at the top.

#3: Tangerine Falls

Moderate | 2.5 miles, 971 ft elevation gain

This trail delivers lush canyon scenery, a lovely waterfall and some moderate climbing. After spring rains the creek is running, shade is plentiful, and the greenery makes for a refreshing hike. Expect some creek crossings and boulder hops — not beginner-level, but a fun challenge.

#2: Rattlesnake Canyon

Difficult | 4.4 miles, 1,600 ft. elevation gain

If you're up for a tougher outing, this one combines mountain and ocean views, open meadows and running water. You'll be earning those vistas — and the trail rewards with broad scenery and a satisfying workout.

#1: 7 Falls, 3 Pools

Moderate | 3.2 miles, 843 ft elevation gain

3 Pools SB

Beloved by locals, this hike is an adventure: a twisty route with some creek‐side boulder hopping, culminating in three natural pools for swimming, sliding or cliff‐jumping (depending on how bold you're feeling). It's a perfect mix of challenge, fun and scenery — bring your water shoes if you want to dip in.
